Raising money for research into eye disease

Biological Sciences postgraduate Salome Murinello has been raising money for the charity Fight for Sight, which sponsors her PhD into inflammatory processes in macular degeneration.

“I wanted to say thank you to the charity which is supporting me to research the causes of one of the commonest causes of blindness in the country,” she explains. “I will be undertaking more fundraising in future and hope people will be generous.”

She has already raised around £1,000 through a cake sale, a London night walk organised by Fight for Sight and a collection at a Greenish Day concert at The Brook. Band members helped out at the event by urging the audience to donate. Salome dressed as a carrot for the walk and concert to encourage people to start thinking of eye sight (as carrots ‘help you see in the dark’).

Fight for Sight has been funding research into the prevention and treatment of blindness and eye disease for 45 years. It is currently spending £6million on projects.
