Dr Douglas Allan will present his recent findings on this subject, drawn from his study of fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster.
Normal nervous system function requires the generation of an enormous diversity of neurons with distinct repertoires of gene expression. Using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as our model, we study how differences in neuronal gene expression are specified by the intersection of subtype transcription factor networks with extrinsic target-derived and hormonal signals. I will discuss our recent findings that address how these intrinsic and extrinsic inputs integrate to initiate the timely differentiation of neurons and then actively maintain their differentiated state for life.
