Event details

Mossy fibre synapses between dentate granule cells and CA3 pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus have unique and fascinating structural and functional properties.

We have a limited comprehension of why their properties are so specialised and, furthermore, even though synaptic plasticity at these synapses has been studied for many decades we have almost no evidence for a role for mossy fibre synaptic plasticity in behaviour. We have recently studied multiple different forms of synaptic plasticity at mossy fibre synapses and argue that each serves a separate purpose to regulate the transfer of information from the dentate gyrus to CA3 networks.
