Antonio Di Lena is an MRes Advanced Biological Science student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2020 with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences. For my dissertation project I designed a hypothetical novel LDL-C lowering siRNA therapeutic for Atherosclerosis and Cardiovascular Disease as part of the Bioscience Business Module. My role as production manager involved modulating the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic profile of our siRNA therapeutic, ensuring optimal delivery, efficacy, and safety in patients.

Research interests

I have a profound interest in the role of neuroinflammation in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases.

As cytokines and activated immune cells can cross the blood-brain barrier, they can modulate neurocircuitry and neurotransmitter systems in the brain known to be dysfunctional in these diseases.

My current research project aims to investigate the role of Fcgamma receptors in immunotherapy for Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, I will be exploring the effects of altered Fcgamma receptor function on amyloid uptake and clearance through phagocytosis.

These studies will lead to better understanding of the side effects that have been observed in immunization trials and hopefully lead to novel, safer and more efficacious better immunotherapy than current therapeutics.

Why I chose MRes Advanced Biological Science

I chose an MRes in Advanced Biological Sciences to further develop my practical skills and gain experience carrying out an extensive research project as part of a lab group. The flexible course structure allows me to study 3rd year undergraduate modules alongside my main research project, further broadening my scientific knowledge.

Aims for the future

Following completion of the MRes, I am looking to pursue a PhD within the scope of my research interests, as I continue to pursue a career in research.
