Mr Aaron Goff

MRes Advanced Biological Science

Aaron Goff is an MRes Advanced Biological Science student within Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated in Biological Sciences (Bsc) at Plymouth University in 2016. For my dissertation, I used a combination of scanning electron microscopy and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to compare different PVC water pipe materials for changes in biofilm growth and changes in population structure, to determine the materials’ use in industry.

Research Area:

Currently, my research area this year is in medical microbiology, looking at mechanisms of biofilm dispersal in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. As a medically important organism that causes opportunistic infections in Cystic Fibrosis patients, this project is therefore important within the medical field.

Why I chose MRes Advanced Biological Sciences:

I chose this course because I have a keen interest in microbiology and wanted to develop my skills further. As a leading university in terms of research, Southampton was a great choice. As my undergrad project was biofilm related, I was excited to be apart of the team at Southampton, where biofilm research is really leading.

Aims for the future:

In the future, I hope to continue with a career in microbiology and hope to start a PhD after this year. After, I hope to go into research within medical microbiology.
