Alex is a postgraduate researcher working within the Centre for Proteomic Research in the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences. He graduated with MBiochem Master of Biochemistry from the University of Southampton in 2018 through combined interest in laboratory and bioinformatics research, before returning to the university to continue his career in systems biology as a PhD student.

Research interests

Previous research projects, supervised within the Computational & Systems Biology group (UoS), involved combined genomics and proteomics data analysis.

Initially, identified tissue-specific enhancer regions in GWAS data for coronary artery disease SNPs and the specific genes affected.  

Later research centered on a comparison of the effects of DNMT1 deficiency on gene expression, in order to determine a stronger correlation to altered protein interactions or to genome-wide differential methylation patterns.    

Current PhD research aims to capitalise upon novel techniques recently developed within the labs of Dr Paul Skipp and Professor Tim Elliott to characterise quantitatively the localisation, type of covalent modifications and the peptide antigens presented by selected skin and respiratory chemical sensitisers.
