Ben Ward is an MRes Advanced Biological Science student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Graduated in 2019 with a BSc(Hons) in Biological Sciences from the University of Surrey. I was involved in a grant proposal dissertation project on investigating the identification and treatment of injured wild raptors within Italy. I have since branched out and moved towards a specialisation within the bioinformatics side of oncogenetics.

Research interests

My research area of interest primarily focuses on the genomics behind oncogenesis and the interactions which viral proteins have in relation to proteins involved in oncogenesis. My dissertation within the University of Surrey did not focus on this subject, but it enabled me to get a better insight into the specialisation which is more suited to myself, that being oncology and bioinformatics.

Why I chose MRes Advanced Biological Science

I chose the MRes in Advanced Biological Sciences as it featured a project with an interesting avenue of research, that being the use of oncolytic viraltherapy for the treatment of CNS cancers.

Cancers of the central nervous system are notoriously difficult to treat due to the delicate area in which they inhabit. The use of viral therapy to target and clear CNS tumours is then a vital area of research, as it would help to generate a therapy without the need for surgical resection of tumours localised to delicate cerebral areas.

Aims for the future

Following graduation, I hope to acquire a job working within my area of interest and, later down the line, acquire a PhD.
