Mr Christopher Winnard is Postgraduate Research Student in Microbiology within Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

My current work is focussing on how bacterial biofilms form on neonatal nasogastric tubes. Biofilms are notorious for their ability to from on a wide variety of indwelling medical devices, often resulting in infection.

Premature infants immune systems are not as developed as full term infants meaning that they are more susceptible to colonisation by potentially pathogenic organisms. The nasogastric tube, used to feed infants that are “nil by mouth”, provides not only a direct route into the infants stomach, but also a surface for the formation of biofilms.

Academic Qualifications

2011-2015: MBioSci Biomedical Sciences 1st Class (Hons). University of Southampton, UK.

Research interests

During the 4th year of my Masters degree, I was involved in a project aiming to Investigate the kinetics and elution rate of antibiotics from a dissolvable substrate used in the treatment of biofilms in prosthetic joint infections.

I was asked to continue this work as part of the Universities Excel placement program. The data I helped generate throughout this project has been written up for scientific publications. As a result of my contributions I was also awarded the “Outstanding Achievement” award at the Excel Southampton Awards in 2015.
