Daniel is interested in tropical ecology, ecosystem function and how land-use change may alter these processes. Exploring these themes has resulted in research projects in Seychelles and Madagascar studying the consequences of forest conversion on ecological communities spanning invertebrates, reptiles and birds.

Academic qualifications

2017-2018: MRes Wildlife Conservation. University of Southampton, UK.
2009-2012: BSc Biology. University of Sussex, UK.

Research interests

My focus is on above and belowground linkages across land-use intensities. I am interested in how and why these systems change in response to anthropogenic pressures and how this may relate to ecosystem function. I take a food-web approach to these problems since interaction frequency and energy transfer between trophic levels is an important structuring force in ecological communities, which facilitate ecosystem-level processes such as nutrient cycling and decomposition.

To achieve this, I will simulate herbivore inputs above-ground and sample the below-ground community network in the SAFE site in Borneo along a land-use gradient. The key challenge and opportunity of my research will be scaling the ecological neworks and functional responses to larger spatial scales that can help inform conservation policy and land management planning.
