Hannah Coull is an MRes Advanced Biological Sciences student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated from the University of Southampton in July 2019 with a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences.

My third year dissertation focused on medical microbiology and was titled “An investigation into the bacteria present on surfaces within hospital departments and the implications for the monitoring and control of bacteria.”

Research interests

I am looking at emerging uropathogens and their formation of bacterial biofilms on urinary catheters. Currently, I am investigating the mechanisms by which Klebsiella pneumoniae attaches to the catheter surface through techniques such as microscopy, biofilm growth on urinary catheters, and comparison with mutants of this species.

I chose the MRes Advanced Biological Sciences as after completing my third year lab project, I decided that research in the lab was the area I wanted to pursue, specifically focused around microbiology. The MRes is a 12 month course which appealed to me as it allows students more time to complete a more detailed research project and go into more depth in our research areas.

In the future, I would like to continue working in a laboratory whether for a pharmaceutical company or studying for a PhD. My aim is to continue investigating important issues surrounding improving public health and combatting diseases. I would like to continue with microbiological research as this is a very exciting and promising area of research globally at the moment.
