Johannes Ottensmeier is an MRes Advanced Biological Science student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Graduated in 2020 with a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Southampton. During my undergraduate degree I developed a keen interest in cellular biology and biochemistry. For my undergraduate project I looked at an enzyme called Pdx1, which makes vitamin B6 and tried to undertand the biochemical process of vitamin B6 synthesis.

Research interests

My research interests primarily focuses on how the phosphoinositide composition within the nucleaus affects the epigenetic architecture of DNA. I am particularly interested in understanding periferal regions of gene localisation within the nucleaus known as laminae associated domains and my aim is to better understand how phosphoinositides underpin their dynamics.

Broadly, I am interested epegenetics and how envrionmental cues trigger changes in DNA structure and therefore how genes are expressed.

Why I chose MRes Advanced Biological Science

I chose an MRes in Advanced Biological Science because I am passionate about research and working in the lab. An MRes will give me the opportunity to gain the skills I need in becoming a research scientist. I love the interplay between the practicality of working in a laboratory and using my brain to solve complex problems.

Aims for the future

Following graduation, I aim to apply what I have learned to neuroscience, looking at neuroepigenetics in the context of psychiatric illnesses such as depression. I hope to pursue this ambition via a medical pathway and then by obtaining a PhD.
