Kieran is an MRes Advanced Biological Science Student within Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated with a BSc in Biology from the University of Southampton in 2017. For my Third Year dissertation I studied the effects of soil quality on the lateral root density of the Onward Pea type Pisum sativum.

Research interests

Research area:

I am currently undertaking the MRes in Advanced Biological Sciences Course, with a focus on Plant Biology, specifically Manganese Transport and MTPs. I am currently focusing on MTP9, and looking at both its specific role and localisation within the plant cell, as well as how it interacts with other proteins in the same family.

Why I chose MRes Advanced Biological Sciences:

I chose to undertake the MRes course as I wanted to improve my skills as both a scientist and researcher. I also enjoyed the idea of being able to undertake my own research and have a longer lab project than what I have undertaken before.

I chose to specialise in the Plant Biology area of this course as this is something I am very interested in. I believe that understanding plant growth and tolerance mechanisms is a crucial research area in the current age, and the MRes course allows me to pursue this in depth.

Aims for the future:

I hope to pursue a career in crop science, with the aim of developing new varieties with a greater tolerance to more extreme abiotic conditions.
