Marley Cassidy is an MRes Advanced Biological Science student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Portsmouth in 2020. For my final year dissertation, I worked in collaboration with a pharmacological company, looking at the molecular biochemistry of antisense oligonucleotide technology, and how it could be used as a novel antibacterial therapeutic against Gram-negative bacteria.

Research interests

My MRes project involves using Raman spectrometry to look for biomarkers presented by viable but non-culturable Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells within biofilms. What is intended is that if proven to be successful, Raman spectrometry could be used as a diagnostic tool to characterise and understand the infectious profiles of patient samples more accurately - leading to better treatments.

Aims for the future

After completing my MRes degree, I would like to obtain a PhD, continuing my research in regard to biofilms and their development - specifically in terms of understanding their pathogenesis and their persistence during infection. After the completion of a PhD, I hope to remain in academia; continuing my research further and contributing to the literature.
