Research interests
My third-year project recognised that the growing population brings the reality that utilisation of redundant cropland, albeit not ideal for cultivation, is a necessity to meet the growing food demand. This is considering that the stability of cropland is threatened by drastic changes in rainfall and temperature associated with global climate change. Moreover, that land is now a diminishing resource, with agricultural and other industries in competition for the limited land available. This presented a need to understand how plants respond to and tolerate stressful environments without a subsequent detriment to yield.
Why I chose MRes Advanced Biological Science
I enjoyed my three years of study at the University of Southampton immensely. This is primarily a result of the enthusiastic staff in the department that supported student learning and encouraged an engaging and dynamic learning environment. I also enjoyed the emphasis on research-based learning, with the department providing countless opportunities to experience field and laboratory research on a first-hand basis.
The course is unrivalled in the opportunities it offers to develop your academic credentials and practical skills necessary to advance your career. I believed continuing my studies at the University of Southampton would allow me to gain the most from my postgraduate degree.
Aims for the future
Ultimately, by partaking in a master’s degree I aim to further myself in my aspirations towards a career as an environmental research biologist.
