Research interests

I am interested in structural molecular biology in general and how structural features lead to different physiological functions of Proteins. Marine microbiology is another research interest of mine.

My current area of research interest lies with the nutrient uptake of ubiquitous marine bacteria. They are considered to be among the most successful organisms on earth and can be found in oceanic and limnic habitats. These bacteria dominate the microbial community in oligotrophic gyres, which make up to over 40% of the earth's surface and are the largest oceanic ecosystems. Their success, in these nutrient depleted habitats, is based on a variety of high affinity multi-substrate transporters. To understand the underlying molecular mechanisms based on structural characteristics I use protein X-ray crystallography. Another aspect of my PhD research project is the in vivo characterization of nutrient uptake in the field (research vessels).
