MRes Evolution

Rosalind Lee is an MRes Evolution: from the Galapagos to the 21st Century student within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I graduated from Southampton University in 2018 with a first class honours degree in Biology. For my dissertation module I studied bioscience education; I planned and carried out an educational activity with sixth form students based on my supervisor’s research.

Research interests

Research Area:

In my final year as an undergraduate I taught sixth form students about bioturbation, an area of research my dissertation supervisor is involved in. During the summer of 2018, as part of my MRes studies, I travelled to the Galapagos Archipelago. My fellow students and I carried out small research projects on the beak dimensions of the endemic finches. My MRes dissertation will focus on the evolution of interspecific differences in bird feather structure.

Why I chose MRes Wildlife Conservation:

I chose to undertake the MRes Evolution course primarily due to a life long interest in the evolution of the natural world. This Master of Research degree will also allow me to expand on my currently limited research experience. This is very important to me, particularly as my undergraduate dissertation module did not involve original research typical of a laboratory or field project. So far this course has already given me valuable skills such a field work experience and knowledge of bioinformatic techniques.

Aims for the future:

My aims for the future include contributing to further scientific research; and becoming an educator, either in a university or school environment. After completing my MRes I intend to investigate PhD opportunities in my fields of interest; which include evolution, animal behaviour, neuroscience and bioinformatics.
