My research involves the development of tools and software pipelines to streamline the analysis next generation sequencing data

Supervisor: Dr Jane Gibson
PhD research title: Interpreting large-scale next generation sequence data using bioinformatic approaches.
Research funding: University of Southampton.

Technological advances in recent years have enabled the widespread use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques in biological and medical research. Massive quantities of genome sequence data are generated by these techniques and a major bottleneck in the field is the analysis and interpretation of the data being produced. The project focuses on developing methods for the analysis of next generation and 3rd generation sequencing data with applications in human disease cohorts and across population datasets.

The project includes direct application of methodology to determine genetic causes of disease as well as developing approaches to determining the influences of sample contamination, subclonal mutation in tumour samples, consanguinity and ethnicity on measures of data quality and genomic features such as runs of homozygosity and Linkage Disequilibrium patterns. Unique data sets are available for this project include human disease-focused samples generated with collaborators at Southampton, as well as publicly available large-scale datasets such as the 1000 genomes project, and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TGCA).
