Dr Judith E Lock BSc (Hons), MRes, PhD, PGCHE

Principal Teaching Fellow, MRes Wildlife Conservation Programme Manager, Board member for Chilworth Conservation Ltd., Board member for University Biodiversity group, Principal Investigator: Education in the Green Space

Dr Judith E Lock

Dr Judith Lock is Principal Teaching Fellow in Ecology and Evolution within Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. She joined the University of Southampton in September 2010, building a national and international reputation for curriculum innovative, including the development and now management of a collaborative provision MRes in Wildlife Conservation, with Marwell Wildlife. This is a unique programme in the UK, with the aim of training the next generation of conservation biologists.

Judith has also implemented innovation within the undergraduate programmes within Biological Sciences, including: enhancing our first year field course to Spain (BIOL1001 Experimental & Field Biology), through the use of iPads and an iBook; developing two more field course modules; developing two behavioural ecology modules.

Career History

2015-Present: Senior Teaching Fellow. University of Southampton, UK.
2010-2014: Teaching Fellow. University of Southampton, UK.
2006-2010: Senior Lecturer Animal Science. Hartpury College, Associate faculty of the University of the West of England, UK.

Academic qualifications

2005: PhD in Behavioural Ecology. University of Manchester, UK.
2001: MRes in Animal Biology. University of Manchester, UK.
2000: BSc (Hons) in Zoology. University of Manchester, UK.

Research interests

Judith’s research expertise are in behavioural ecology, conservation biology and their interface. Her postgraduate students are working on a project with Marwell Wildlife, to reintroduce sand lizards to a site in North Hampshire. Judith is also developing her pedagogical research through the Researching Assessment Practices group at the University.

Judith has attracted funding to support public engagement activities, under the umbrella of Southampton BioBlitz. In summer 2016 “Zebraversity challenge” ran weekly events in Southampton city centre, at our sponsored sculpture in Marwell Wildlife’s “zany zebras” sculpture trail. We also visited local schools, running BioBlitzes in their school grounds. Funding for these activities came from the Education Enhancement fund and Public Engagement with Research unit. In 2017, funding from NERC’s Public Engagement pilot allowed us to further investigate barriers and solutions to education in the green spaces for the teachers of Southampton.
