Dr Robert P. Howlin is Research Fellow in Microbiology within Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Career History

2009-present: Postdoctoral Researcher. University of Southampton, UK.

Academic Qualifications

2005-2009: PhD. University of Southampton, UK.
2002-2005: BSc in Biomedical Sciences. University of Durham, UK.

My background is in microbial decontamination and novel biofilm intervention strategies in a biomedical setting. My current project, funded by the NIHR Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit, involves the investigating the role and application of nitric oxide as a novel adjunctive therapy in chronic infections such as cystic fibrosis.

Research interests

My interests include

  • microbial decontamination & novel anti-biofilm intervention methods
  • the role and application of nitric oxide (NO) in the dispersal of bacterial biofilms in cystic fibrosis and other biofilm related diseases
  • the development of novel, targeted NO donor molecules as therapeutic interventions (a collaboration with University of Wollongong and UNSW)
  • investigating the methods by which different bacterial species interact in the CF lung
  • the role of biofilms in ventilator assisted pneumonia (VAP)
