If you want to be challenged to work hard, encouraged to do what you want to do, and celebrated for what you have achieved, Southampton is where you want to be. I have changed so much as a person since being here, and my confidence levels have soared thanks to the people I am surrounded by, both lecturers and classmates alike.

I have always been fascinated by the natural world and the systems and cycles that govern it which is why I chose BSc Biology. I started on the Foundation Year which meant that I could pursue my goals in spite of my A-Level choices.

Southampton is a warm and friendly environment where everyone is there because they love what they do. I love the people. I love meeting new lecturers, talking with students and sharing ideas with them all. The teaching staff are fantastic, they are all so motivational and very down to earth. They will help you with a personal problem but also encourage you to think that little bit further. The facilities available at Southampton are incredible, the library is full of books, the Life Sciences Building has some brilliant study spaces, you can always find somewhere perfect for you to study, if you look hard enough.

I am the new president of the Herpetological Society, 2016-2017, I love the society because not only is it educational, we get external speakers to come in and talk for us, it’s also a place where we can get together and talk about reptiles and amphibians, and meet others who are passionate about them too!

I loved the Spanish Field Trip over the Easter break in the first year. I didn’t want to leave! It really opened my eyes to the world of field biology, and I came back being able to identify most of the plants I saw on campus! However, my best memory so far is being part of the team to set up and run a new interdisciplinary module, Valuing Nature. This is a topic I am very passionate about, and one I believe everyone should have an education in.

If you want to be challenged to work hard, encouraged to do what you want to do, and celebrated for what you have achieved, Southampton is where you want to be. I have changed so much as a person since being here, and my confidence levels have soared thanks to the people I am surrounded by, both lecturers and classmates alike.

Once I graduate, I want to stay in academia. I think Southampton’s open and encompassing environment really helped me come to the conclusion that that is what I wanted to do for my career.
