Esther von Schulthess Biochemistry
3rd year student
Hi, I'm Esther von Schulthess and I studied Biochemistry within Centre for Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton.
I was involved in all steps, from planning the experiments through analysing the results obtained.
Undertaking a summer studentship gave me new insights into the realities of laboratory work. The eight-week placement, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, enabled me to explore how the brain can compensate for genetic mutations, by examining changes within specific nerve cells.
I enjoyed working independently on a project of scientific value. I was responsible for carrying out the work, with support from Dr. Joanne Bailey, a postdoctoral student. Some of my results were used in Joanne's presentation.
I have now changed tack for my third year project and I am now looking at the structure of a protein found in the hepatitis C virus.
After graduation I am aiming to take a PhD position in protein biochemistry in the UK or overseas.
