Dr Cristián Bravo PhD, MSc, BEng, FHEA

Dr Cristián Bravo's photo

Dr Cristián Bravo is a Visiting Academic within the Business School at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on the development and application of data science methodologies in the context of credit risk analytics, covering areas such as deep learning, text analytics, image processing, and social network analysis.

Dr Bravo has an extensive publication list in journals and international conferences, covering the multiple topics in data science and analytics. He is also the co-author of the book “Profit Driven Business Analytics”, published by Wiley in English and Chinese.

Dr Bravo is also editor of the journal Applied Soft Computing (2017 IF: 3.541), the official journal of the World Federation on Soft Computing, and of the Journal of Business Analytics published by the UK's Operational Research Society.

Dr Bravo’s work is closely aligned real-world problems both in the public and private sector. His current work in deep learning for micro and small business lending is developed closely with companies, and he also supports regulators in topics of financial inclusion in SMEs. He has led and participated in research projects worth a combined £500k.

Dr Bravo received his MSc in Operations Research and PhD in Engineering Systems from the University of Chile. Before joining the University of Southampton, he served as Instructor Professor at the University of Talca, Chile; Research Fellow at KU Leuven, Belgium; and Research Director at the Finance Centre, University of Chile.

Research interests

Dr Bravo's research interests are in the intersection between banking and analytics. He aims at the development and application of data analytics models and processes to the problem of credit risk in micro, small and medium enterprises; covering diverse topics and methodologies. He also has a particular interest in banking regulations for these sectors.

Currently Dr Bravo is very active in the intersection of credit risk analytics and deep learning. His work is focused in the use of alternative data, such as text, images, audio, and social networks, for deep learning models for fair and inexpensive evaluation of SMEs.

PhD Supervision

Main supervisor of Mr Matthew Stevenson in the project “Improving Funding Availability for SME with Advance Predictive Analytics Models” (ESRC SCDTP funded)

He has served as supervising committee member of Dr María Oskarsdöttir and Dr Libo Li (KUL, Belgium); and Dr Mimi Chong (UWO, Canada).

Research Projects

He is currently PI in the Leverhulme Small Grant Project “The Value of Opinions in Credit Evaluation for Small Businesses – Transforming Subjective Evaluations into Objective Risk Measurements” (£10k direct contribution).
