Research interests

Ian’s research broadly examines the influential role played by risk perceptions and risk communications on decision making processes. He is particularly interested in how a person’s understanding of risk can affect their professional, environmental and health-related decisions and how complex risk-related information can be presented so that it is easily understood by all.

PhD Supervision

Ian is currently supervising PhD students who are examining topics such as how to improve the process of communicating financial risks to lay individuals and how to improve flood risk preparedness in less developed countries. Ian is keen to supervise additional PhD research projects that relate to any of the following areas:

  • Risk perception and risk communication
  • Judgment and decision making
  • Motivating engagement in pro-social or environmentally sustainable behaviours
  • Understanding and responding to global population growth

If you have obtained an MSc degree with distinction or have a first class honours degree in a relevant subject (and you meet the language requirements of ILETS of 7.0 or equivalent), please email Ian your PhD research proposal and CV. You can also apply for our PhD programme online using our PhD Programme webpage, where you can also find out about our scholarships for full-time PhD entry.
