Professor Andrew Goddard BSc PhD CIPFA, FCA

I am a qualified chartered accountant, being a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales and a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (FCA and CIPFA). I worked in the public sector, including local government and housing, for several years before joining the accounting firm KPMG. 

I began my academic career at Portsmouth University and completed my PhD, entitled, Financial and Organisational Control in the Public Sector - a Paradigmatic Exploration, at the University of Southampton. My teaching is in the areas of management accounting, accounting theory and research methodology. I have researched extensively in public sector financial control, including local government, health and also work closely with CIPFA on research matters, being the Chair of the British Accounting Association Special Interest Group in Public Service Accounting Research. I currently supervise several doctoral research students.

 

Research interests

My current research interests include: researching the relationship between accounting, accountability and governance, particularly in the public services; researching contextual aspects of accounting, using grounded theory; historical analyses of the development of accounting in the public sector ; strategic management accounting; auditing.

  • the use of audit reports in predicting company failure
