Chris McHugh is a Principal Enterprise Fellow for the Department of Banking & Finance within Southampton Business School at the University of Southampton.

I joined the University of Southampton in 2021 following a 22 year career in investment banking and a few years in academia.  I originally graduated with an MA in Engineering from King’s College, Cambridge and after 4 years as a management consultant I studied for an MBA from London Business School.  I am currently working toward my PhD at Southampton focusing on the mobilisation of private capital in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.

As a Managing Director at HSBC for 14 years I ran trading and structuring teams responsible for the risk management of: Counterparty Risk (‘XVA’), Funding and Collateral Discounting risk; Energy Derivatives; Emerging Market Credit; and Foreign Exchange derivatives.  I was at the forefront of the bank’s commercial response to regulatory change and capital optimization.  Prior to that I worked on the trading floors at Credit Suisse First Boston and Deutsche Bank for 6 years trading and structuring exotic FX derivatives, and at Merrill Lynch in corporate finance working on subordinated bank capital structures.

After leaving banking in 2016 I joined the faculty of The London Institute of Banking & Finance lecturing on derivatives, risk management and sustainable finance, and later became the founding Director of the Centre for Sustainable Finance.  I also spent 10 years as a visiting lecturer on the Master in Finance course at the Judge Business School, Cambridge University and tutored on undergraduate and executive programmes at Oxford University.

In parallel to my work as a Principal Enterprise Fellow at Southampton, I am a Senior Advisor to the International Association of Credit Portfolio Managers.  The IACPM is a trade organisation representing about 130 financial institutions globally.  My role is to work with the members that are development banks and export credit agencies on their risk management agendas.
