Professor Julia Bennell is the Director of the Department of Decision Analytics and Risk Research and is currently the Deputy Head of Southampton Business School.

Julia Bennell is currently the Deputy Head of Southampton Business School. She graduated in 1994 with a first class honours in mathematics and management science and received her PhD in Management Science in 1998 from the University of Wales. She was promoted to Professor of Management Science at the University of Southampton Business School in 2010. She was the director of CORMSIS (Centre of Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems), one of the top three OR/MS research groups in the UK, that crosses the Southampton Business School and Mathematics, from 2011 - 2014. She was Head of the Centre of Excellence in Decision Analytics and Risk Research, one of the six departments in the Southampton Business School from 2012 -2015. The department includes around 30 academic staff, is highly active in research, produced 3 impact case studies for REF 2014 and runs nine MSc programmes. She is a member of the executive committee of the European working group on cutting and packing since 2005. She was chair of the executive committee of the Southern OR group between 2005 - 2009 and served on the general council of the OR society during that period.

Her main research interests are optimization models for logistics, specifically working in cutting and packing, vehicle routing, scheduling, network design and heuristic algorithms. She has published three invited review papers: two on cutting and packing in EJOR and JORS and one on runway scheduling in Annals of OR. She has also given keynote presentations in EURO 2009 and OR50 and invited to numerous workshops in these areas.

She has publish over 40 papers in international journals including Management Science, European Journal of Operational Research, International journal of production research, International journal of production economics, Journal of heuristics, computers and OR, Journal of the operational research society. She has won over one million pounds of research funding from a variety of sources including EPSRC (£550k), BBSRC (£210k) and KTP (£225k). She has undertaken a variety of roles as guest editor, stream and session organiser, invited seminar speaker, and organised two international conferences in Southampton. She also has extensive links with external organisations, undertaking consultancy and research projects with DSTL, NATS and a range of SMEs and she led a programmed of training courses for HMRC.




Research interests

Research interests: combinatorial optimisation problems including; cutting and packing; scheduling; and transportation.

  • Train scheduling on congested networks
  • 3D irregular packing in transport and additive layer manufacturing
  • Generic solvers for cutting and packing problems
  • Waste or reuse of residual materials
  • Zero waste pattern generation for fashion
  • Optimisation of marine fleet maintenance.
