Research interests

Various research projects have included links between operations strategy and performance in a range of areas including – inventory (JIT); Quality; Innovation and specific research on mass customization, agility, and Lean.

I have supervised 18 PhD students through to successful completion, including 3 in 2016.


Research group



I am Editor in Chief for the International Journal of Operations & Production Management, which is the leading European journal on Operations Management and in the top three in the world in its field. Under my leadership IJOPM has improved its ranking from 3 to 4.

I am also on the editorial board of Technovation - a leading journal in Technology Management and I regularly act as a referee for a range of journals including the Journal of Operations Management, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies and the International Journal of Technology Management.

I have been external examiner for 5 different universities and I have just been appointed as external examiner at Cardiff University. 

I am a visiting professor at Baruch College CUNY, New York.

Module coordinator for all operations management courses on MBA (all modes) and MSc.

As well as lecturing, researching and publishing, I have always aimed to be collegiate. Many of my PhD graduates now hold senior positions, including professorships. At Bath we built a very strong Operations Group that included the likes of professors Lamming, Cousins, Maylor, Blackmon, Graves, and Harland. We hosted the very prestigious EurOMA conference, which was very successful

At Exeter, I led our successful EQUIS bid. 

During my tenure as Head of Department of Management at Exeter, we were ranked 1st in the UK for overall satisfaction in Management Studies in the National Student Survey 2006-9.

Also, our research rankings rose dramatically.

As MBA director at Exeter, I completely redesigned the full and part-time modes of the MBA; and I designed and launched the Modular MBA – all of which have been very successful for the School.

During my tenure as Head of Department of Management at Exeter The Times Good University Guide 2010 ranked Business Studies fifth in the UK - the Department had been ranked 15th in 2006.
