Enjoy every minute of every day; don’t hold back on anything, it is a wonderful period in your life.

I had the pleasure of being taught by some outstanding Economics Professors on my degree at Southampton, Paul Geroski was one and in contrast to A Levels the course gave me the opportunity to form my own opinions.  Southampton had an outstanding reputation for Economics and the facilities were excellent, but above all else I met some great friends who nearly 30 years later I continue to probe for advice.

I am Chief Executive of Fuller, Smith and Turner; we are a listed company with family shareholders. We run nearly 400 of the South's best pubs and brew the world's best beer, London Pride amongst many others. It is great fun and we are pretty successful. I suppose my career in our industry really began at Southampton. In my second year I was ‘elected' to run the bar at my hall of residence, but beyond that I learnt a great deal about economic theory and marketing which I have been able to develop and use in my career.

My advice to students starting their degree at Southampton would be enjoy every minute of every day; don't hold back on anything, it is a wonderful period in your life.
