Southampton Business School

Barclaycard has recruited several talented postgraduate students from the Business School and Mathematics after inviting them into the company to work on summer projects.

Andy Martyn heads graduate recruitment and talent development at Barclaycard’s credit risk department. He says: "The reason we can continue to be the credit risk department of choice in the industry is that we're bringing in people with cutting edge skills and innovative ways of thinking. The students we meet from Southampton impress me every time I'm with them."

Andy adds: "This is something we are looking to repeat, because we've identified it as a really rich source of talent that we want to develop and nurture."

Barclaycard took on three students for summer projects in 2009, and recruited all three at the end of their placements.

Students of Masters-level Management Science and Operational Research programmes all undertake a three month placement as part of their study. Companies and organisations offering placements over the years have included British Airways, RBS Insurance, Dstl, NHS, and the Met Office.

Southampton has a strong reputation for analytics and its courses are very relevant to the needs of business. I’ve been very impressed with the abilities of these students.
