This was a consultancy project aimed at introducing new performance management systems to increase efficiency and boost turnover by 50 per cent in three years.

The project partner

Benham is a Southampton based precision engineering company. Established in 1978, it supplies major aerospace and defence companies in the UK and overseas. It has invested in the latest technology to engineer and manufacture complex components to the exacting tolerances demanded by prime contractors.

The project

Graham Manville, Senior Fellow in Strategy and a Certified Management Consultant, led the four month programme, aided by analyst Sarah Barnard.

Graham and Sarah worked with senior management to bring in a ‘balanced scorecard’ approach to business excellence with key performance indicators, involving the 60-strong workforce in the project throughout. Lean manufacturing techniques were also introduced. Benham is working towards the bronze award of the Society of British Aerospace Companies’ Supply Chains for the twenty-first century initiative (SC21).

"With our combined expertise, we were able to provide strategic input to increase the company’s efficiency and turnover. Working with industry partners benefits the University too. It bases our future research on real-life business issues and we are also able to use this within our teaching so students are always up to date with the latest business practices," said Graham Manville.

The University gave us the structures and tools we needed to enable us to progress and manage change. Our advisers identified areas where we could improve and helped us implement new systems.
