Corporate Governance Conference Event

We are pleased to invite you to the British Academy of Management Corporate Governance Conference, which will be held in the Business School, University of Southampton, United Kingdom, during 24th – 25th June 2019, and invite the submission of original papers related to, but not limited by, the following broad theme:

Sustainable Corporate Governance

The financial crisis and recurrent corporate scandals in the last two decades have sparked a series of revisions to governance policies, initiating reforms on a global scale. In spite of this, the recent collapse of Carillion and BHS has demonstrated, once again, the failure of corporate governance to obviate lethal threats to businesses, financial markets and society at large, indicating that further change is essential. Such perennial financial catastrophes lead us to question the fundamental mechanism of corporate governance at national and international levels, posing the research question how effective our traditional models, and how they might be reformed to fit them for the purpose of monitoring constantly changing global institutions.

This two-day conference is to bring together researchers to debate the most acute issues confronting academics, practitioners and policy-makers against a rapidly-changing political, social and economic landscape. We invite the submission of original papers focusing on research questions with consequences for corporate governance practice and policies, with an emphasis on stakeholders and organizations in the public and private sectors, in both developed and developing countries.

The conference comprises the following four elements:

Parallel Sessions

There will be themed parallel sessions at which conference delegates will be able to present their ongoing work, exchange ideas with their peers, and gain feedback from experts and senior academics.

Research Methods Workshops

As part of the conference, we have organised two research methods-focused workshops on qualitative and quantitative research procedures. These workshops will enhance participants' understanding of new methods and techniques recently utilised in business, economic and management research, led by experts who will facilitate an exchange of ideas on how to enrich the quality of your research by using the latest methodological tools.

• The Qualitative Research Workshop will focus on some of the challenges of qualitative research, with particular focus on the development of research questions, data generation and analysis.
• The Quantitative Research Workshop will discuss the latest research methods and techniques available in corporate governance, with an emphasis on the methods available to determine its impact on companies and society.

Getting published workshop

The British Journal of Management Editor-In-Chief will deliver an address giving authors an insight into the perils, problems and pitfalls of getting published and how to avoid them, using the BJM as an example.

Paper submissions procedure

We invite papers covering all areas of corporate governance and governance-related studies. Authors are encouraged to submit both full papers and works-in-progress; however, in case of the latter, submissions should be completed drafts that include principal results.

Key dates:

• Deadline for paper submission: Midnight (GMT) 26 May 2019. Authors are encouraged to submit their work as soon as it is ready, as we review submissions as papers are received, returning our decisions as quickly as possible.
• Notification of acceptance will be no later than: 31 May 2019.
• On-line registration deadline: 6 June 2019 on the BAM website.

Papers will be selected via a double-blind review process undertaken by the programme committee.

The fees cover conference registration and pack, lunch, tea and coffee for the two days.

The Conference Gala Dinner plays a dynamic role in the social programme for delegates. If you would like to attend the dinner, the fee will be £35 in addition to your registration fees.

The dinner will take place at Garden Restaurant, 44 High Road, Southampton SO16 2JF.

Keynote speakers' biographies

Professor Douglas Cumming

Douglas Cumming, J.D., Ph.D., CFA, is the DeSantis Distinguished Professor of Finance and Entrepreneurship at Florida Atlantic University College of Business.  Previously, Douglas was a Professor and the Ontario Research Chair at the Schulich School of Business, York University, in Toronto, Canada from 2007-2018. He has also held visiting appointments at Essex Business School, Kobe University, and EMLyon, among others.

Douglas has published over 150 articles in leading refereed academic journals such as in finance, management, and law and economics on topics that include corporate governance, venture capital, private equity, hedge funds, crowdfunding, law and finance, and entrepreneurship.  He is the Managing Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Corporate Finance and Annals of Corporate Governance.  Douglas’ work has been reviewed in numerous media outlets, including The Economist, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Globe and Mail, and The New Yorker.  

Professor Geoffrey Wood

Professor Geoffrey Wood is Dean and Professor of International Business, at Essex Business School. Previously he was Professor of International Business at Warwick Business School, UK. He has authored/co-authored/edited sixteen books, and over one hundred and sixty articles in peer-reviewed journals. Previously he was Professor of International Business at Warwick Business School, UK. He holds honorary positions at Griffith and Monash University in Australia, and Witwatersrand and Nelson Mandela Universities in South Africa. Geoff’s research interests centre on the relationship between institutional setting, corporate governance, firm finance, and firm level work and employment relations.

Geoffrey Wood is Editor in Chief of the British Journal of Management, the Official Journal of the British Academy of Management (BAM). He also serves on the BAM Council.  He is also Co-Editor of the Annals of Corporate Governance and Associate Editor of Academy of Management Perspectives.

He is also editor of the Chartered ABS Journal Ranking list.

He has had numerous research grants, including funding councils (e.g. ESRC), government departments (e.g. US Department of Labour; UK Department of Works and Pensions), charities (e.g. Nuffield Foundation), the labour movement (e.g. the ITF) and the European Union.
