Which project management environment is more likely to achieve sustainable competitive advantage? By 2027 employers will need 87.7 million individuals working in project orientated roles. It is anticipated that the competence gap could result in a loss of US$207.9 billion in GDP (11 countries analysed) throughout 2027 (PMI, 2017). The 2017 APM study suggest that only 22% of projects wholly met their original objectives, while 87% rated competent project teams critical/very important and 88% said effective governance was important. Both are highest ranked in terms of importance as success factors (APM, 2017). Worryingly, research continues to demonstrate that organisations are failing to deliver successful project outcomes. Project management, as an industry led disciple, still lacks some of the academic rigour in conceptualised approaches - with team competence, decision making and governance aspects being critical to project success.
