Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

To be perfectly honest, the final decision point leading me to Southampton was the hope for better weather. Being so far south in the country, I was hoping it would mean Southampton was not as prone to grey, rainy days as the English weather is stereotypically said to be!

Other factors leading me to choose Southampton was an interesting mix of courses offered here. My course in particular, MSc Knowledge and Information Systems Management, was not a course I found in many other universities, despite the fact that the course is highly relevant in a large number of fields today. I felt that taking this course would therefore surely distinguish me from others later in life.

What is it like studying here?

My course is, in my opinion, highly relevant and very interesting. I love how several of the modules do not even have a textbook, but rather use recently published articles, research and more, as a base for theory. It goes to show how "updated" the course is, and how it stays up to date with current developments and trends.

The campus itself is rather charming, with parks and green areas all over. Furthermore, you basically have everything you need within walking distance from uni: banks, cafes, food shops, a general shop which literally sells everything from cards to candy, pubs and a gym. Not only is it super convenient, but I like the safe "bubble" it provides.

The community is welcoming, warm and so easy to dive into. I met most of my friends on the second day upon arriving here, thanks to Facebook groups and the likes created for the University's student community.

Have you taken advantage of any extra opportunities outside of your course?

In addition to attending different events arranged by the Student Union, I personally have signed up as Course Representative. I therefore regularly attend meetings with other reps and peer leaders.

What have been your Southampton highlights so far?

Highlights include different events organised by the Student Union, such as the Christmas ball and PG night out, but also more general stuff such as going to Stags pub for karaoke with friends.

How has your time at Southampton helped you to grow as a person?

Being exposed to such a varied number of different cultures and nationalities has definitely helped "open my eyes" so to speak. Meeting people from different backgrounds has not only taught me much about cultural differences but has definitely made me more appreciative of the life I have, and the opportunities I have been given.

How do you rate the study facilities at the University?

Most facilities are rather nice, especially the library, the different catering facilities and cafes. Most lecture halls I have attended have also proved to be of good standard. The gym here at Highfield Campus is small but has all the equipment you need for a great workout. There is also a swimming pool and sports hall which are great for more varied exercise.

What is the city of Southampton like to live in?

Southampton is very much a student city. The nightlife is varied so you will surely find something for your taste. There are also great opportunities for shopping in the city centre. There is also an amazing cinema which I highly recommend trying.

What are your plans and/or ambitions after you graduate?

I aim for a managerial position, preferably in a sustainable energy company, but I am not too picky.

What advice would you give to a student starting their degree at Southampton?

You have so many opportunities to meet amazing people from all over the world here. I therefore highly recommend getting involved with different societies and attend different social events to meet new friends. However, make sure you still take time to attend lectures and do work during the semester - do not wait until the last minute. You can get so much "free" knowledge by attending lectures and actively participating here, so reading up before you attend lectures is definitely a great tip.
