Over the last 16 years as an academic and consultant in the hospitality industry, I now have a better understanding of the critical role that people play in this sector. From the point of view of education, I have witnessed the transition of students from the classroom to the workplace and how this has transformed their perceptions about employment in the hospitality industry. I have also worked closely with clients who have shared some of their expectations about the people that they look to attract to and eventually retain in their organisations. Engaging with these two parties has helped me appreciate that a lot more research is needed in order to understand the organisation/employee dynamic in order to influence positive outcomes for the organisation, the employees and the customers. As a result, I decided to enroll on the DBA programme in order to achieve this goal. Specifically, my research interest is to explore the relationship between an organisation’s service climate and employee service behavior.

Why did you come to  Southampton to complete your DBA?
A lot of events led me to Southampton. The singular one I can remember is the encouragement that I received from the Programme Director during the application process. At the time I was not even sure what a DBA was, and whether what I wanted to do was even researchable. There were several universities that I had applied to. I acknowledge that the feedback I received from Southampton was extremely helpful and it allowed me to make an informed decision. And I did.

What are your plans when you finish your research?
I intend to apply the findings from my research into the work that I already do as a lead consultant of Human Capital Development at W Hospitality Group in Lagos, Nigeria.

What have been your Southampton ‘highlights’?
The first highlight has been meeting the faculty and students at the Business School. An enriching experience that has shaped my understanding about what unites us all…a desire to improve ourselves and the communities in which we live and work.

What is the research community like in Southampton Business  School? What do you enjoy about being part of it?
It is incredibly cutting-edge. Having all the resources that you need to reach your goals is for me the best part of it. The doctoral college presents so many opportunities for enriching your personal and professional life through several workshops and courses – all year through!

What networking and employability opportunities have you undertaken?
Attending the research colloquia twice a year, I have met researchers from every imaginable field. This has also given me the opportunity to explore possible collaborations with them. Southampton provides the perfect meeting place for this to happen.

What opportunities have you taken up (within your degree programme and extra-curricular)? In what ways are they helping your personal development?
Since I started the DBA in 2016, I have initiated the Hotel HR Directors’ Forum in Lagos. We meet every quarter and discuss issues that impact on people. It has been very successful with membership growing every meeting. We have found it to be very helpful as a platform for engaging the change agents in a positive way. In October 2017, I anchored a roundtable on human capital development at the Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF) in Kigali, Rwanda.

What is Southampton like as a place to study for a DBA?
I love the green spaces and the small-knit feel to the campus where I am. Very conducive for study and a quick pizza when needed!

What advice would you give to a student wishing to take up a DBA at the Southampton Business School?
It is a great opportunity to study at a university that is part of the Russell Group. This means that you are assured about the commitment to quality from the faculty at all levels. The resources available are also proof that you will have access to cutting-edge research in your field.
