Thesis title: The Dementia Project: New healthcare simulation models for dementia
This project will research computer simulation models to address aspects of dementia management, ranging from individual care; models of diagnosis, progression, and risk; system-level care delivery, pathways, and capacity issues.
The challenge will be integrating modelling approaches to capture different levels of resolution, taking account of behavioural factors. The key aim is to make these models useful and usable in practice, so that NHS and Local Government Commissioners and providers can identify new ways to effectively manage the anticipated growth in demand and provide effective support for patients and families.
This project is based in the Business School under the supervision of Prof. Sally Brailsford, who has over 25 years’ experience of using computer simulation for a range of healthcare applications. Clinical, epidemiological, and other subject-matter expertise will be provided by Dr Bronagh Walsh, Professor Paul Roderick, and Dr Chris Kipps.
The sponsor is the Wessex Academic Health Science Network (AHSN), working on behalf of local NHS organisations to address the growing needs of Dementia in an increasingly aging population. The link into Wessex AHSN is via the University’s Centre for Implementation Science, under the direction of Caroline Powell.
The project has a supervision team and a steering group which provides links to the Aging and Dementia theme of the Wessex CLAHRC, which focuses on clinical interventions for dementia patients.
The project formally started in October 2014, and is currently looking at the demographics of the region; the stages and sub-types of disease progression; starting to identify some of the key issues about care pathways and hospital admissions; and the state-of-the-art of healthcare modelling in this field.
