Business School Summer Programme

The University of Southampton is one of the founding Russell Group universities in the United Kingdom and ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide (QS World University Rankings, 2018). Located on the south coast of England the University hosts Southampton Business School where we are offering a two week summer programme to learn about UK business and UK culture.

Southampton Business School is truly distinctive in its multidisciplinary and integrated approach, enhancing its world-class, cutting-edge research that shapes future business practice and providing a responsible educational experience that connects people and organisations to deliver social and economic impact. The Business School is comprised of six academic departments and has approximately  2,200 students studying undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, DBA and PhD programmes.

The two week summer programme will engage students with contemporary business topics that focus on areas that are relevant to businesses in a new world as well as providing opportunities to visit different parts of the UK, including a trip to the capital city of London. The summer programme will provide students with not only a rich cultural experience but a thought provoking and interactive learning experience that is offered by a leading, research intensive UK University. Incorporated into the programme are keynote lectures that will address significant, relevant business topics with opportunities for you to ask questions to leading international academic staff who are at the forefront of their discipline.

The Business School Summer Programme will include a meet and greet service at London Heathrow airport, accommodation in the University student halls, a programme filled with excursions to cultural and historical centres as well as lectures and classes which will be interactive in nature and provide you with the opportunity to raise questions, challenge thinking and engage in a rigorous and relevant learning experience.

The summer programme runs from Monday 16th to Friday 27th July 2018 inclusive with accommodation available from Saturday 14th July.

You will study three business topics:

Understanding Business in a New World
This theme will impress upon students the importance of the ‘big ideas’ that have impacted most strongly on the development of advanced human societies motivate students to reflect on the relevance of these big ideas for their own lives, and for the wider challenges of the contemporary business world. The overarching aim of this theme is to establish business management as an intellectually stimulating and liberal subject which affords students with a powerful and enlightening understanding of a contingently emerging world - a world that we are nonetheless often tempted to take as natural and somehow inevitable.

Financial Management for Businesses in a Globally Competitive Market
This theme will look at fundamental financial management, management accounting and financial reporting areas that underpin modern business. Students will be exposed to current practices that ensure businesses efficiently operate, aim to maximise profits and report them accurately.

Innovation and Contemporary Business Challenges
This theme takes a view that Businesses face many challenges in the modern world. Topics will explore, for example, the impact of innovation, disruptive technologies and implications/ opportunities of working in a digitally connected environment.

Additional topics
If you choose to stay for the additional two weeks you will have the opportunity of studying a wide variety of culture topics. The full list can be found here.

Heathrow Airport - meet and greet. You will be met by a University representative and transported to your accommodation.

You also have the option to join the International Summer School Programme and stay for an additional two weeks until 10th August. 

Fees and credits

The two-week Business School Summer Programme: £2,100 (£500 deposit and £1600 final payment)

The four-week International Summer School: £3,350 (including the first two-weeks of Business School Summer Programme)

The fee includes:

  • Teaching in small, friendly groups of normally between 15 to 20 fellow students
  • Meet and Greet from London Heathrow Airport and drop-off at the end of the course
  • A single room within our university halls of residence from the duration of the summer school including bedding and other essentials
  • Breakfast, lunch and evening meals during the week
  • WiFi internet access in your room and around campus
  • Transport and entry fees for all trips and excursions which feature as part of the course
  • Barbeques, quizzes and social events as part of an exciting cultural programme
  • Supporting material and information for each topic to take away
  • A certificate of attendance

The Business School Summer Programme is a credit bearing programme which may be able to count towards your studies at your home university.

How to book your place

Students of all levels of English above the minimum, including native speakers, will find the course enjoyable and rewarding.

To apply you will usually: •Be a student currently studying at a recognised educational institution outside of the UK. •Be 18 years of age or older at the start of the school. •Have IELTS 5.5 (or an equivalent English language qualification) in listening and speaking.
