Routes into Law

Many students successfully pursue a career in law following their first degree. There are a variety of career options in the field of law, many of which can be explored via Prospects.

If wishing to become a solicitor or barrister, there are some differences in training routes for these professions for law and non-law students. For example, if aspiring to become a solicitor and depending on when you commenced the academic stage of legal education (e.g. LLB or GDL), you may be eligible to take the LPC/Training Contract route and/or the new Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) route. To train to become a barrister, non-law students would need to complete a recognised law conversion course such as the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). For support with identifying what route is best for you, please book an appointment with an adviser.

To overcome financial implications associated with the academic and vocational stages of training to become a solicitor or barrister, some course providers are offering level 7 conversion or preparation courses (such as the MA LawPGDL and LPC with MSc or LLM). These courses are not to be confused with other level 7 Law courses (such as a standard LLM degree) – a standard LLM degree is not required to train to become a solicitor or barrister but is very beneficial in terms of developing knowledge in a specific area of law and/or if wishing to go on to study for a PhD. More information on the benefits of studying a LLM can be found on

If wishing to get into law, please research the different routes into law based upon your personal circumstances and your career aims.
