MyCareer User Guide

MyCareer

MyCareer is our online careers site, which allows all University of Southampton students and graduates to easily find out about everything we have to offer.

Simply log in and personalise your profile so you can view and hear about:

All you need to do is log in as a student using your normal University username and password. If you are a graduate you simply need to register on the system to continue to use MyCareer.

MyCareer Homepage

The MyCareer homepage allows you to preview some of the opportunities and events that we are advertising at any given time; they can be viewed in a section called ‘Features’. You can also personalise your homepage by moving the different summary panels around, allowing you to select the most relevant and position them at the top.

My Profile

Having a MyCareer profile allows you to set and save preferences so the opportunities and notifications you receive match your interests.

My Profile: When you first log in to MyCareer you will be instructed about how to set up your profile. Once completed you can view your personal details in the 'Profile' tab.

Update Profile

Personal details: This is where you can amend any of your contact information, such as email address and phone number. This will only update contact information stored in MyCareer.

Email Preferences: To see and select the type of notifications you receive and how regularly you receive them select ‘Update Profile’ from the drop down menu and then the ‘Email preferences’ tab.

Opportunities of Interest: Within this tab you can select both the type (full-time, part-time etc.) and sector (Engineering, Healthcare etc.) of opportunities you would like to receive notifications about. Once you have selected all the preferences you wish to set up please remember to click save. You will then be taken to the home page and see a message that reads 'Profile Updated'.  If this is not the case please contact careers@southampton.ac.uk to report the problem with a screenshot of the issue if possible.

CV Management: This allows you to upload application documents such as CVs to MyCareer. This can be done at the request of a member of the Careers team or so you have a copy saved to your account. To upload a document select the ‘Upload CV’ button and select your application form from your own files. You must write a message or description of the document in the ‘comments’ box in order for it to upload successfully. Please note uploaded documents will only be reviewed if previously agreed by a member of the Careers team.

Assigned Forms: This allows you to view all careers schemes you have expressed an interest in as well as any application forms you have completed for these schemes.

Problems with your Email Preferences?

If you stop receiving updates from MyCareer for any reason please check that your registered email address in the system is correct. This can be done by clicking on ‘Profile’ followed by ‘Update Profile’. If you would like to stop receiving all email notifications regarding MyCareer please select ‘No’ to all options in the ‘Email preferences’ tab within ‘Update Profile’.

Appointments

My Appointments

Booking Summary: This tab allows you to view your previous and upcoming appointments/events.

Appointment Details: Once you have had a drop-in and/or a careers appointment you can view all your previous interactions with careers staff by clicking on the ‘Appointments’ tab and then ‘My Appointments’; this includes notes made by careers staff regarding any appointments you had (these are confidential and can only been seen by advisors and yourself). To access these notes click on the relevant appointment from the list of previous interactions.

Event Details: If you wish to view all the events you have previously attended you can see this within the ‘Event Details’ tab. You also have the option to apply filters to search for previous events by date.

Calendar view: This allows you to view all of our events and workshops in a schedule view which can be filtered to search by day, week and month.

Cancelling an Appointment: If you have been booked a careers appointment and can no longer attend, you can cancel the appointment by clicking 'Appointments', followed by 'My appointments', 'Booking Summary', then selecting the relevant appointment and 'Cancel Booking'. You must provide a reason for your cancellation.

Events

MyCareer allows you to browse and book various different sessions such as: skills workshops, 1:1s, company presentations and a number of other careers events we facilitate throughout the year.

My Events

Booking Summary: This tab allows you to view your previous and upcoming appointments/events.

Appointment Details: This tab allows you to view all previous careers appointments and drop-in sessions. For more information on this please see the ‘Appointments’ section.

Event Details: If you wish to view all the events you have previously attended you can see this within the ‘Event Details’ tab.  You also have the option to apply filters to search for previous events by date.

Calendar view: This allows you to view all of our events and workshops in a schedule view which can be filtered to search by day, week and month.

Search events: Here you will see a list of our events and workshops, you can filter them by date, title, type of event and location. To refine your search select the relevant preferences on the left hand side of the screen. Once you have found an event you are interested in you can book onto it by opening the event and clicking ‘Book Now’.

Event calendar: This allows you to view all of our events and workshops in a schedule view which can be filtered to search by day, week and month.

Cancelling an Event Booking: If you can no longer attend an event you have booked onto you can remove yourself from the booking list. To do this first click on 'Events', 'My Events' then the ‘Booking Summary’ tab and select the relevant event within 'Upcoming Booked Events', followed by 'Cancel Booking'.

Jobs Board

The Jobs Board on MyCareer is updated daily and features hundreds of vacancies, including graduate employment, summer placements, internships and term time work.

Saved Opportunities: This tab allows you to view all opportunities within any scheme which you have saved. To find out how to save an opportunity read the ‘Search Opportunities’ section.

Search Opportunities: To view the Jobs Board and search for the many different opportunities employers have on offer select ‘Search Opportunities’ within the ‘Jobs Board’ tab. You can search and filter the Jobs Board by selecting different business areas, locations, salary brackets, both posting and expiry dates, opportunity type and volunteering skills category. All these filters can be found down the left side of the Jobs Board underneath the ‘Refine Search’ button. If you come across an opportunity/job you would like to bookmark you can do this by clicking on the ‘Actions’ button and then ‘Save’ within the drop down menu. All saved but uncompleted applications can then be viewed by clicking on ‘Saved Opportunities’ within the ‘Jobs Board’ tab.

Saved Searches: Once you have applied your preferred filters you have the option to save it by selecting ‘Save this search’ located in the left hand filters bar. You can do this for numerous searches and look back at them at a later date by clicking on the red ‘Saved Searches’ button located on the right hand side of the screen.

Search Organisations: You can also search the Jobs Board for specific organisations through the ‘Search organisations’ tab. You can search and filter through organisations by selecting different business areas, country, region and organisation size.

Excel Southampton Internships

The Excel Southampton Internship Programme offers paid internship opportunities during university vacation periods and term time.

Search & Apply: You can use filters on the left hand side of the screen to complete a more tailored and refined search. Once you have selected your preferred filters you have the option to save it by selecting ‘Save this Search’ located in the left hand filters bar. You can do this for numerous searches and look back at them at a later date by clicking on the red ‘Saved Searches’ button located on the right hand side of the screen.

How to Apply: If you find an opportunity you are interested in you can apply by clicking on the ‘APPLY NOW’ button. Once you have done this you have a one hour time frame before the window times out, therefore we recommend completing your application within a Word document where you can save your progress while completing the application. If you spend longer than an hour it will not save any of your application. Please note once you submit an application you will not be able to edit or change anything, therefore we recommend you proof read your application before you finally click ‘Submit’.

My Applications: After you have successfully submitted an application for an Excel Internship opportunity you can monitor the progress of your application by selecting ‘My Applications’ within ‘Excel Southampton Internships’. You can bookmark any opportunities you find by clicking on the ‘Actions’ button and selecting ‘Save’ within the drop down menu. All saved but incomplete applications can then be viewed by clicking on ‘Saved Opportunities’ within the ‘Jobs Board’ tab.

Volunteering Bank

The Volunteering Bank is where we advertise a variety of volunteering opportunities with local charities and non-profit organisations.

Search & Apply: This page will display all Volunteering Bank opportunities, you can then use filters on the left hand side of the screen to complete a more tailored and refined search. Once you have applied your preferred filters you have the option to save it by selecting 'Save this search' located in the left hand filters bar. You can do this for numerous searches and look back at them at a later date by clicking on the red ‘Saved Searches’ button located on the right hand side of the screen. Once you have found an opportunity you are interested in, you can apply by clicking on the ‘APPLY NOW’ button if available, or by emailing the required information to the application email address provided.

My Applications: This is where you can view all your completed application forms for programmes applied to through MyCareer, such as Excel Internship opportunities or the Business Innovation programme.

Year in Employment

The Year in Employment is an opportunity to complete a work placement between your second and third year. This is a terrific chance to try an industry aligned to your degree or explore something completely different.

Search & Apply: This page will display all year long placements, you can then use filters on the left hand side of the screen to complete a more tailored and refined search. Once you have applied your preferred filters you have the option to save it by selecting 'Save this search' located in the left hand filters bar. You can do this for numerous searches and look back at them at a later date by clicking on the red ‘Saved Searches’ button located on the right hand side of the screen. Once you have found an opportunity you are interested in, you can apply by clicking on the ‘APPLY NOW’ button if available, or by emailing the required information to the application email address provided.

My Applications: This is where you can view all your completed application forms for programmes applied to through MyCareer, such as Excel Internship opportunities or the Business Innovation Programme.

Business Innovation Programme

The Business Innovation Programme is designed to offer you the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working on a real-life business issue put forward by a local business or not-for-profit organisation.

Search & Apply: To apply to the programme select ‘Search & Apply’ within the ‘Business Innovation Programme’ tab and select the opportunity ‘Business Innovation Programme’. To complete the Business Innovation Programme application form click ‘APPLY NOW’.  Once you have done this you have a one hour time frame before the window times out, therefore we recommend completing your application within a Word document where you can save your progress while completing the application. If you spend longer than an hour it will not save any of your application. Please note once you submit an application you will not be able to edit or change anything, therefore we recommend you proof read your application before you finally click ‘Submit’.

My Applications: This is where you can view any completed applications for the Business Innovation Programme.
