MyCareer User Guide

MyCareer is our online careers site, which allows all University of Southampton students and graduates to easily find out about everything we have to offer.

Simply log in and personalise your profile so you can view and hear about:

All you need to do is log in as a student using your normal University username and password. If you are a graduate you simply need to register on the system to continue to use MyCareer.

MyCareer Homepage

The MyCareer homepage allows you to preview some of the opportunities and events that we are advertising at any given time. You can also see any upcoming appointments and saved opportunities on your homepage. Recommended opportunities, events and organisations are displayed on your homepage based on the preferences selected in your profile. You can also access GoinGlobal on this homepage, which includes information and advice for working abroad and eCareersGrad, which includes resources for international students and interview preparation support.

My Profile

Having a MyCareer profile allows you to set and save preferences so the opportunities and notifications you receive match your interests.

My Profile: When you first log in to MyCareer you will be instructed about how to set up your profile. Once completed you can view your personal details by clicking on 'Profile' under the 'Me' option in the top right-hand corner.

Edit Profile:

  • Personal details: This is where you can amend any of your contact information, such as email address and phone number. This will only update contact information stored in MyCareer.
  • Email Preferences: You can select the type of notifications you receive and how regularly you receive them in the 'Edit profile' section. If you do not wish to receive any notifications from MyCareer, do not tick any boxes in the 'Preferences' section.
  • Vacancy Preferences: Within this section you can select both the type (full-time, part-time etc.) and sector (Engineering, Healthcare etc.) of opportunities you would like to receive notifications about. Once you have selected all the preferences you wish to set up please remember to click 'Save'. You will then see a message that reads 'Your profile has been updated'. If this is not the case please contact careers@southampton.ac.uk to report the problem with a screenshot of the issue if possible.

My Career Development Opportunities applications:

  • This section allows you to view any application forms you have completed (including those saved as a draft) for any of our 'Career Development Opportunity' schemes, such as UoS Internships or Student Innovation Projects. Where applicable, it will also show the opportunities you have registered an interest in.
  • If you click on ‘Career Development Opportunity Scheme list’ at the top you can see the details of different programmes run by Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise, such as the Career Mentoring Programme or UoS Internships.  Where applicable, you can register your interest in a programme, which enables us to keep you informed of relevant opportunities.

Problems with your Email Preferences?

If you stop receiving updates from MyCareer for any reason please check that your registered email address in the system is correct. This can be done by clicking on ‘My profile’ followed by ‘Edit profile’. If you would like to stop receiving all email notifications regarding MyCareer please leave all options blank in the 'Preferences' section.

Appointments

My bookings:

  • Booking Summary: This tab allows you to view your upcoming appointments and events alongside any recently attended appointments and events.
  • Appointment Details: Once you have had an appointment, such as an Ask the Adviser session, you can view all your previous interactions with careers staff in this tab. This includes appointment notes made by careers staff (these are confidential and can only been seen by advisers and yourself). To access these notes click on the relevant appointment from the list of previous interactions.
  • Event Details: If you wish to view all the events you have previously attended you can see this within the ‘Event Details’ tab. You also have the option to apply filters to search for previous events by date.
  • Calendar view: This allows you to view all your booked appointments and events in a schedule view which can be filtered to search by day, week and month.

Cancelling an Appointment: If you have booked an appointment and can no longer attend, you can cancel the appointment by clicking 'Appointments' and then selecting the relevant appointment and 'Cancel Booking'. You must provide a reason for your cancellation.

Events

MyCareer allows you to browse and book different sessions such as: skills workshops, 1:1s, company presentations and a number of other careers events we facilitate throughout the year.

My bookings:

  • Booking Summary: This tab allows you to view your upcoming appointments and events alongside any recently attended appointments and events.
  • Appointment Details: This tab allows you to view all previous appointments. For more information on this please see the ‘Appointments’ section.
  • Event Details: If you wish to view all the events you have previously attended you can see this within the ‘Event Details’ tab. You also have the option to apply filters to search for previous events by date.
  • Calendar view: This allows you to view all your booked appointments and events in a schedule view which can be filtered to search by day, week and month.

Search events: To search for upcoming events click on 'Search' and then select 'Events' from the drop down menu. Here you will see a list of our events and workshops; you can filter them by date, title, type of event and location. To refine your search select the relevant preferences on the left hand side of the screen. Once you have found an event you are interested in you can book onto it by opening the event and clicking ‘Book’.

Events calendar: This allows you to view all of our events and workshops in a schedule view which can be filtered to search by day, week and month.

Cancelling an Event Booking: If you can no longer attend an event you have booked you can remove yourself from the booking list. To do this click on 'Me' then 'Bookings'. Find the relevant event under 'Event Details' and then click on 'Cancel Booking'.

Jobs Board and Volunteering Bank

The Jobs Board on MyCareer is updated daily and features hundreds of vacancies, including graduate employment, summer placements, internships and term time work. In addition to this, our Volunteering Bank features a wide variety of volunteering opportunities with local charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Saved Opportunities: This tab allows you to view all opportunities within any scheme which you have saved. To find out how to save an opportunity please see the ‘Search Opportunities’ section.

Search Opportunities: To view the Jobs Board or Volunteering Bank and search for the many different opportunities employers have on offer, click on ‘Search' then 'Jobs Board' or 'Volunteering Bank' on the top toolbar. You can search and filter by selecting different occupational areas, locations, salary brackets, both posting and expiry dates and opportunity type. All these filters can be found down the left side. If you come across an opportunity you would like to bookmark you can do this by clicking on the ‘Actions’ button and then ‘Save’ within the drop down menu. All saved opportunities can then be viewed by clicking on ‘Saved Opportunities’ on your homepage.

  • Saved Searches: Once you have applied your preferred filters you have the option to save it by selecting ‘Save this search’ located in the left hand filters bar. You can do this for numerous searches and look back at them at a later date by clicking on the blue ‘Saved Searches’ button located on the right hand side of the screen.

Search Organisations: You can also search for specific organisations. To do this, click on ‘Search' then 'Organisations’ on the top toolbar. You can search and filter through organisations by selecting different occupational areas, country, region and organisation size.

UoS Internships

UoS Internships are paid internship opportunities which take place during University vacation periods and during term time.

To search for opportunities click on 'Search' and then 'UoS Internships'. You can use filters on the left hand side of the screen to complete a more tailored and refined search. Once you have selected your preferred filters you have the option to save it by selecting ‘Save this Search’ located in the left hand filters bar. You can do this for numerous searches and look back at them at a later date by clicking on the blue ‘Saved Searches’ button located at the top on the right hand side of the screen.

If you find an opportunity you are interested in you can apply by clicking on the ‘APPLY NOW’ button.

You can bookmark any opportunities you find by clicking on the ‘Actions’ button and selecting ‘Save’ within the drop down menu. All saved roles can then be viewed in the ‘Saved Opportunities’ section on your MyCareer homepage.

Year in Employment Placements and UoS Job Shop

The Year in Employment is an opportunity to complete a work placement between your second and third year. This is a terrific chance to try an industry aligned to your degree or explore something completely different. 

The UoS Job Shop is a collection of paid part-time and seasonal roles which may be suitable to complete alongside your studies.

To search for opportunities click on 'Search' and then 'Year in Employment' or 'UoS Job Shop'. You can then use filters on the left hand side of the screen to complete a more tailored and refined search. Once you have applied your preferred filters you have the option to save it by selecting 'Save this search' located in the left hand filters bar. You can do this for numerous searches and look back at them at a later date by clicking on the blue ‘Saved Searches’ button located at the top on the right hand side of the screen. Once you have found an opportunity you are interested in, you can apply by clicking on the ‘APPLY NOW’ button if available, or by emailing the required information to the application email address provided.

You can bookmark any opportunities you find by clicking on the ‘Actions’ button and selecting ‘Save’ within the drop down menu. All saved roles can then be viewed in the ‘Saved Opportunities’ section on your MyCareer homepage.

Student Innovation Projects

Student Innovation Projects are designed to offer you the opportunity to gain invaluable experience working on a real-life business issue put forward by a local business or not-for-profit organisation.

To apply for an opportunity click on 'Search' and then 'Student Innovation Projects' and then click on the description that is displayed. To complete the Student Innovation Projects application form click ‘APPLY NOW’. Once you have done this you have a one hour time frame before the window times out, therefore we recommend completing your application within a Word document where you can save your progress while completing the application. If you spend longer than an hour it will not save any of your application. Please note once you submit an application you will not be able to edit or change anything, therefore we recommend you proof read your application before you finally click ‘Submit’.

To view your completed application(s) for this programme click on 'Me' then 'Career Development Opportunities'.

A range of additional information and resources are available to access through MyCareer.

The Career Discovery tab features over 2500 careers-related articles, videos and podcasts. In addition to this, the ‘Resources’ icon in the top right hand corner of the homepage provides links to other websites that may be of interest, including the UoS Career Hub and eCareersGrad.
