Whether you have a career path in mind or you’re unsure where your degree will take you, our UoS Internship opportunities could give you the chance to explore a range of possibilities and offer short term, real life experience in the working world. In addition, all UoS Internship positions are fully paid and add great value to your CV and application forms and enhance employability prospects and professional skills.

Over a number of years, the Careers and Employability Service has built some fantastic, lasting connections with local businesses and not-for-profit organisations, resulting in a unique range of opportunities to be offered, exclusively to students from the University of Southampton.

As we are sure you will appreciate, we are currently in an unprecedented situation with the outbreak of coronavirus, which has significantly affected the UoS Internship Programme. However, we do currently have a limited number of remote UoS Internship opportunities available. These can be found on our MyCareer Jobs BoardPlease note, these will be advertised on a role by role basis, so please check each individual role's closing date. 

We appreciate that these circumstances may be giving you cause for concern and we are aiming to do everything possible to support  you. Therefore, we have put together advice and guidance that relates to all Work Experience Programmes which you may find helpful.

The following students and recent graduates are able to take advantage of our UoS Internships.:

o Undergraduates on any course and year group
o Masters students
o PhD students (you must seek confirmation from PhD supervisor that you can be made available to complete an internship)
o Recent graduates and alumni (must have graduated less than 12 months prior to internship start date)
o International students (subject to visa restrictions*)
o Erasmus and students on a year abroad (provided you have returned to the UK for the internship)

*If you have a Tier 4 Visa, we would recommend that you read the 'Protecting your Tier 4 Visa' document and observe the working restrictions as outlined by your Visa.

Programme Basics:

o   Internships last between 2-12 weeks during Easter, summer or term-time

o   All internships are paid at a minimum rate of £8.92 p/h

o   Working hours for full-time internships are 35 hours per week

o   Opportunities are available within all sectors, working with organisations of various sizes

o   Opportunities will generally be advertised for 3 weeks - new opportunities will be posted on the first Monday of every month between October and May

Application Process:

1.      Search for an opportunity on MyCareer, our in-house careers portal. (If you are a graduate, you will need to register before searching for opportunities) 

2.      Submit your application and CV to your chosen role on MyCareer

3.      We will review your application and notify you of the outcome

4.      If successful, your application will then be passed on to the employer

5.      The employer may choose to shortlist further and will notify you of their decision

6.      If selected for interview, the employer will contact you to arrange a date and time

7.      If appointed, you will be sent an Internship Agreement to sign. This must be signed before you begin your internship

Once you have successfully secured an internship position, the Work Experience Team will be in contact to ensure you are prepared for your internship and have completed all necessary documents relevant to the role.

This includes but is not limited to:

o   Attending a UoS Internships preparation session

o   Completing right to work checks and payroll documents (where necessary)

o   Signing an internship agreement and returning it back to us

o   Filling in monthly timesheets and submitting them on time (where necessary)

o   Attending a UoS Internships reflection session

o   Completing online feedback detailing your experience of your Internship once it has concluded
