In July, we ran an online symposium on ‘The Secret Life of Immortal Data’ as part of the WebSci 2020 Conference

Our fantastic panel of speakers included:

Anneke Lucassen, Clinical Ethics and Law Southampton
Katharine Wright, Nuffield Council on Bioethics
Alan Grogan, Avanade-Accenture & Microsoft Business Group
Dee Menezes, UCL Institute of Health Informatics
Richard Conway, Elastacloud

The panel were expertly chaired by Professor Susan Halford, University of Bristol, who then joined the panel to answer questions from the audience for the second half of the event.

The event stimulated some very thought-provoking and insightful conversations about the challenges presented by emerging forms of personal data that have a life beyond their initial construction. We explored how we might prepare for future consequences of large data collections and how it might be necessary to rethink our understanding of issues of consent, ownership, ethics and privacy.
