Event details

Debi Hall and Peta Coulson-Smith presented at the ‘What Works in Assessment and Feedback: Simply Better’ University of Southampton Conference. They presented the Case Based Group Learning activity which the Clinical Ethics and Law team run during the fourth year for medical students. They outlined the activity encourages students to engage in ethical decision making. Students are required, over a four week period, to discuss the issues raised by the case, build arguments for actions they would take and explain their decisions. Each group receives written feedback on a draft of their work during the activity and then more detailed feedback on their final piece of work. The activity serves as preparation for exam questions in a similar format, and serves to develop students’ skills for their future practice as a doctors. The activity is not mandatory, yet the majority of students sign up to take part. The session generated discussion regarding the teaching and assessment of ethics and law and enabled the CELs team to share good practice within the university.
