Using Hospital Data to Improve Healthcare

We are exploring how we can facilitate better use of hospital data to improve standards of care within the NHS.

As we move to a digital age, we are collecting more and more data from patients every time they visit the hospital. Combining the data collected from lots of patients brings new possibilities for learning about health and illness, and improving standards of care. However, a lot of routinely collected data is not fully used in this way, partly because doing so has been viewed as research that is separate from the NHS.

To ensure the NHS can benefit from the data we need a better system that allows clinical data to be used for research and fed back into practice MORE seamlessly than currently happens.

It is really important that this system is trustworthy and can promote and protect the interests of individuals, groups and communities. To develop this system democratically, we need lots of people to tell us about their concerns, experiences and hopes for the future.

This short animation looks at this issue.
