New Study - Published in Scientific Reports
A new study has been published in Scientific Reports from the Bone and Joint Research Group, which is led by Professor Richard Oreffo with Drs Emma Budd, May De Andres Gonzalez and Tilman Sanchez-Elsner. The study has shown that a specific microRNA is raised in Osteoarthritis (OA), indicating a role in development of the disease, and could be a potential direct therapeutic target.
The work by Dr Emma Budd, as part of her PhD Thesis, showed changing the expression of this microRNA in bone stem cells to form chondrocytes and cartilage provided a novel cell based approach to enhance cartilage formation and regeneration at sites of articular cartilage injury and thus, potentially, prevent the onset of OA.
