Bioengineering seminars are informative talks organised by the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton

Thanks to sponsorships from the Bioengineering Sciences Group (Faculty of Engineering and the Environment), Faculty of Medicine, and Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS), the organising team comprising Dr Dario Carugo (coordinator), Ilaria Sanzari, and Antonio De Grazia (from CHDSCR), organises monthly scientific meetings aiming at sharing outstanding research advancements in the field of Biomedical Engineering.

On Friday 16th March, the team organised an outreach event on 3D biofabrication technologies and materials, including a workshop and a joint seminar given by Prof Alvaro Mata (Queen Mary University of London) and Prof Giovanni Vozzi (University of Pisa, Italy).

The workshop had 80 attendees, and demonstrated the potential of 3D printers in biomedicine (with Gianluca Cidonio and Michael Glinka from CHDSCR), with a focus on the use of smart hydrogels for improving the future of tissue engineering and on new perspectives in 3D fabrication of medical devices (such as urinary stents).

The workshop was followed by a joint talk with 60 attendees, comprising students, researchers and academics across different Faculties and disciplines. Prof Giovanni Vozzi and Prof Alvaro Mata shared cutting-edge advancements in the development of 3D fabrication techniques and biomaterials for regenerative medicine.

The speakers came from prestigious institutions and were impressed by the organisation and the motivation of all people involved, and by the level of engagement shown by the audience during both workshop and seminar. They were also fascinated by the level of research and technologies developed at the University of Southampton.

Dario, Ilaria and Antonio look forward to welcoming more and more speakers because “research is collaboration, and sharing and understanding the state of the art is crucial to develop new and exceptional science”.

You are kindly invited to the next Bioengineering Seminars about drug delivery systems (11th April, IDS) and bio-mimetics (20th April, Nuffield Theatre).

Thanks to all the people involved!
