BAME

We are committed to Equality for all races and ethnic minorities, and Chemistry at Southampton is very much a multicultural and multinational environment. We recognise the benefits that working in an inclusive environment brings to all, and we welcome everyone from every background. We work to ensure all our staff and students are supported and treated fairly.

The University has signed the Race Equality Charter in 2018 as a commitment to addressing racial inequalities within the higher education sector. The Race Equality Charter (REC), set up in 2016, is an initiative from the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) which works to further support equality and diversity for staff and students in higher education. Currently 41 institutions are signed up to the Charter with 9 holding a Bronze Award.

The University has a BAME Network, launched in May 2017, to raise awareness of and promote race equality and cultural diversity at the University. All Black, Asian and Minority ethnic staff, academic and professional services and postgraduate research students are welcome.

The Network has also launched a Buddy scheme. The scheme is a way for BAME (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) members of staff to meet with other BAME staff for friendly, non-judgemental conversations about their experiences at the university. Whether your experiences are positive or not, BAME Buddies are there to listen and support.
