PhD student

I was initially attracted to Chemistry in Southampton by its excellent reputation for teaching and research. When I came to visit during the UCAS application procedure, I met both staff and current students. All were friendly, approachable and highly enthusiastic about Chemistry and the University in general.

Postgraduate study is a very different experience from undergraduate study – you’re not worrying about exams or lab reports, it’s all about the project, and you get to push forward into entirely new areas

I chose the MChem course because I was attracted by the idea of doing a year-long placement in industry. The course provides both a solid knowledgebase in the first two years, opportunities to specialise in your chosen field in the last two years, and real-world research experience.

The most enjoyable aspect of my undergraduate studies was the excellent relationship between staff and students – a real strength of the department. Lecturers were all friendly, approachable and willing to help.

During my time as an undergraduate, I undertook research projects, sat on the Staff-Student Liaison Committee, was employed on various summer projects and helped at various outreach events. Far more than simply studying for a degree!

I went straight from being an undergraduate to a postgraduate because I wanted to maintain the momentum from my degree studies. I decided to do a PhD so I had the opportunity to work on an extended and novel research project.

My advice to students considering pursuing postgraduate study would be to pick a project you are passionate about. After my PhD, I am hoping to continue working at the interface of chemistry and technology.
