Hi, I'm Duncan Parker and I studied MChem Chemistry with six-month placement within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

To be able to gain industrial experience while still doing the degree was a major influence when deciding to choose this course.

Before A-levels I did not plan to do chemistry at degree level, and I feel it could have been one of my biggest regrets.  The department is without doubt one of the best and the course provides scope to learn about every aspect of the subject while providing flexibility to specialise in an area if you wish.

This year I will be heading away from campus for six months on placement and I can't wait. To be able to gain industrial experience while still doing the degree was a major influence when deciding to choose this course.

Outside the lecture theatre I'm an active member of both ChemSoc and SUSU's Comedy Society as well as helping out with SUSU and university outreach events.  Chemistry is hard work but the university and the union provide great opportunities to help you let off steam with a lot of friendly faces so you forget stress of the day.

I'm local anyway, but there is a side of life in Southampton that you don't see as a member of the public.  Student life is so active that it seems almost like a bubble - all the halls are within a 20 minute bus journey, chemistry is based firmly on campus and all shops, pubs and clubs are barely a stone's throw away.
