Hi, I'm Matt Baggs and I studied MChem Chemistry with six-month placement within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

I have recently secured an exciting opportunity to do a sixth month placement at a company at the forefront of liquid crystal technology research.

I enjoyed chemistry at A level and was keen to study at a higher level. When researching Universities I discovered that Southampton had one of the best chemistry departments in the country. On an Open Day I was particularly impressed by the quality of the laboratories which were new, clean and well-equipped together with friendly and helpful laboratory supervisors to assist in undergraduate study. I also found the leafy campus appealing with numerous opportunities to meet new people.

Having access to a selection of lecturers at the cutting edge of their respective fields was an enticing prospect when applying, who did not disappoint. I found the content of modules in my degree to be both challenging and fulfilling.

Thanks to the chemistry department I have recently secured an exciting opportunity to work for a sixth month placement at a company at the forefront of liquid crystal technology research.

I have enjoyed Southampton's colourful nightlife and broad range of restaurants both near campus and further afield. There are also shopping opportunities in the city centre such as West Quay.

After graduating I plan to continue my studies to PhD level and eventually find work in the pharmaceutical industry as well as taking time out travel.
