Dr Benno Meier is a Senior Research Fellow within Chemistry at the University of Southampton.

ORCID

Benno Meier received his PhD (summa cum laude) in Physics from Leipzig University in 2012. He then joined the Levitt lab in Southampton where he worked on quantum rotors and long-lived states. He was promoted to Senior Research Fellow in 2015.

In 2018 Benno received a £0.8M EPSRC fellowship to develop so-called bullet-dynamic nuclear polarization.

Benno is co-founder and CEO of Hyperspin Scientific Ltd.

Research interests

Our group explores conceptual changes for the generation and utilisation of hyperpolarization in magnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging. Some of these changes will improve our ability to track metabolism in vivo, but the key objective is to achieve a dramatically more sensitive acquisition of multi-dimensional magnetic resonance spectra of molecules ranging from small metabolites to proteins. We seek to accelerate the throughput of liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance data a 100 to 10 000-fold by developing a world-unique variant of dissolution-dynamic nuclear polariztion (D-DNP) known as bullet-DNP.
