Dr Geoff Hyett is an Associate Professor of Inorganic materials chemistry, and the undergraduate admission tutor for chemistry programmes.
Our research focuses on the exploitation of mixed anion materials and encompasses a ‘cradle to grave approach’ for materials exploitation: from discovery, to thin film optimisation and all the way through to functional property testing.
Geoff Hyett studied chemistry at the University of Oxford as both an undergraduate and postgraduate. He was awarded an MChem in 2002, before completing a doctorate under the supervision of Professor Simon Clarke in 2005, on the topotactic modification of layered oxysulfide and selenide materials to control their magnetic properties. In the next stage of his research career Geoff developed an interest in chemical vapour deposition as a route to functional photocatalytic materials as thin films, working with Professor Ivan Parkin at University College London. While in London Geoff was appointed to his first teaching position, as a sessional lecturer at Birkbeck College on their life sciences university access course. In 2009 he was awarded an independent Ramsay Research Fellowship and took up his first full time academic lectureship at the University of Leeds in 2010. In 2013 he was appointed Lecturer of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Southampton and was promoted to associate professor in 2020.
